In big cities, such as Warwick, Birmingham and Coventry, it can be hard to spot animals other than common, domestic pets. However, if you are interested in animals, then there are plenty of places that you can go to, just outside of these cities that will give you the chance to see a wide variety of different animals. From farm animals on a farm park in the Midlands to sea life at a city centre location, there are plenty of opportunities to see all creatures great and small.
Sea Life Centre in Birmingham There is actually a sea life centre right in the middle of Birmingham, which is the perfect place to see a wide array of sea creatures. The tanks and rooms of the aquarium have been lit in a special way to ensure that the 1000 creatures contained within are all shown off in their best light. The aquarium is home to two giant sea turtle, which are being kept to support conservation efforts. The highlight of any trip to this aquarium is a walk through the shark tunnel, where visitors are able to walk through an underwater tunnel area and watch sharks swimming past the glass just inches from their faces.
A farm park in the Midlands Just next to Hatton village, a few miles outside of Warwick, is situated one of the best examples of a farm park in the Midlands. This is a great place to let your children see and interact with traditional British farm animals. Animals which you can view include poultry, sheep, ponies and many more. There is also an expert falconer on site, who regularly displays the park's birds of prey. This is a great opportunity to see hawks, falcons and owls in action. The falconer will describe the bird's behaviours when they are in their natural habitats, and you will be able to see some of the birds take flight, if the weather is suitable.
A Zoo and a Castle Dudley Zoo is a great place to visit if you want to see rare and exotic animals. The park is home to 1000 animals from different areas of the world. Some of them are species which are native to Britain, whilst others are from the plains of Africa, or the jungles of Asia. There are informational displays about many of the animals and it is even possible to interact with some of the friendlier ones. Once you have finished looking at the animals, there is also a castle on site, which dates back to the Norman period. Be prepared to hear about its very horrible history. Beware – it's not for the faint hearted!
Wild Wildlife Take a walk on one of the many hiking trails around the Midlands, and you will be able to spot wildlife in its natural habitat. Although the Midlands may not be as hilly as some other areas of the United Kingdom, there are still plenty of ponds and rivers where wildlife and waterfowl may be lurking.
